Established in 2001, the Dot NAME gTLD is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal sites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are famous by. Initially, just 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you desired to acquire john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed 3rd-level domain names remained online.

There are no particular conditions on who can purchase a dot NAME domain, but in order to keep the idea behind its establishment alive, the Registry may verify who the owner is and if there is no link between the owner and the actual domain, the registration may be challenged.
